Carnival of Real Estate #168 – Star Trek Version

by Rob Cook on December 7, 2009

It is with great honor that I’m hosting the Carnival of Real Estate this week, a weekly round up of the best real estate blog posts.  A special thanks to Zillow.com’s Business Development Specialist Drew Meyers for scheduling this week’s CoRE to be hosted here at River Banks to Corn Fields, please have a look around.

In honor of FINALLY getting to see the latest (and nearly greatest!) Star Trek, this week’s CoRE has a Star Trek theme.  In no particular order, the following real estate blog posts were among my five favorite submitted this week and each stands tall alongside my fave five Star Trek films. Be sure to click through to all winning blogs posts this week.

For some added fun, click each movie poster to a key scene or trailer from each Star Trek masterpiece.  Engage…

Kahn!

No self-respecting Trekkie would count Star Trek II – The Wrath of Kahn as anything less than a masterpiece in the now-eleven films long series.  The same could be said for the awesome Josh Ferris at Geek Estate Blog for his Top 20 Gift Ideas for Real Estate Geeks. Congrats Josh, that makes two CoRE’s winning posts in a row!

With the plethora of gift options out there it can be tough to choose what to buy for your lovable geek. So, whether you’re seeking ideas for others or a few treats for yourself this year, the following list of top 20 gifts for real estate geeks will help point you in the right direction.

James Tiberius Kirk!

Star Trek (2009) revives the Trek series in a most boldy-going where no one has gone before fashion.    Houston, we have a problem, but certainly not with the entry by the MyHomeHouston Team.  In Getting A Loan Just Got Tougher: Fannie Mae Changes Debt To Income Ratio, The Team tries to understand why one one hand Uncle Sam is trying to give money away in the $8,000 tax credit, yet is making it quite difficult to qualify for that home you’ve been dreaming of…

So the government is offering an 8k tax credit to help the real estate market recovery. There have been a lot of debates back and forth about whether the government should be spending this much money…

…So why would the government spend all this money and at the same time allow rules to be put in place which would effectively negate some of the positive impact of the tax credit.

Nuclear Wessels

Much like our third entry to the CoRE, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home offers some of humor at the mid-point of this week’s entries.  Riley Smith of the Real Estate Coconut lets us in on a short conversation with a real estate agency with a million dollar listing in This is no joke

Me: “Hello, may I please speak with Mickey Mouse Realtor.  I would like to show his listing located at 44 Miami Lane”

Mickey Mouse Realty: “No he is not here”.

Me: “Okay, can I have his cell phone please”.

Mickey Mouse Realty: “No”

Resistance is futile

Star Trek: First Contact is the best of the Next Generation series on the silver screen.  Seems they needed a few good tips following their previous effort.  As a newer blogger myself, I can stand to use a few common sense tips about better blogging.  RE Advantage’s timely article 10 Tip To A Better Real Estate Blog helps us newbie bloggers…

Content is the driving force of your blog.  Write good, unique and inspiring content.  Write about things your target audience wants to read, otherwise you are not going to be very successful in getting potential buyers or sellers to read your posts.

V'ger...expects an answer

And last up is the very first of the Trek films, Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  While not exactly first in the hearts of many Trek fans, it did rescue us from endlessly watching re-runs of the original TV series for the 38th time.  In a completely unrelated way, here is The Housing Chronicles Blog’s Patrick Duffy take on housing trends in terms of new construction and demographics in today’s economy with The future of new housing is — foggy?

Over the past 30+ years, most of the new homebuilding activity was to follow the demands and tastes of the 78-million-strong Baby Boomer generation, from starter homes and move-up housing to vacation homes, retirement communities and even condominiums in urban locations.

… demographic changes in the U.S. will force many builders and developers to change how they build for a population that is getting increasingly grayer (older) and browner (more diversified).

Wow, two in a row! :) I’d like to thank the academ… er, thank you to everyone who voted for my gift post in this week’s CoRE. I’ve never seen a Star Trek spin on the CoRE but I like it. Nice work Rob!

Rob

Thanks for choosing my post. I am glad to see you liked it. Social Media is certainly becoming a driving force in today’s REALTOR’s arsenal. We are trying something new this week. We are at the REALTOR Triple Play Convention in Atlantic City for the next 3 days. We are going to be doing live Twitter posts, daily blogs/vlogs, and possibly setup a live webcam stream. Let’s see how well people want to stay connected. If anyone is around stop by booth 627 and say hello!

Thanks for the citation on my post! The demographic changes which I wrote about were Topic #1 at the recent ULI Fall Conference and Urban Land Expo in San Francisco. Those who don’t adapt to the changing customer base — and this includes brokers as well as developers — will eventually find themselves behind the trend. Fortunately for real estate brokers, they tend to be much more forward-thinking than most builders!

It was great getting to review all the submissions, there were 11 total to choose from, not a single one was unworthy of the CoRE. I really enjoy those CoRE’s that have a fun theme and, while I wouldn’t consider myself a “hard core” Trekkie, I certainly wanted to add some flair this week. Thanks to all and I hope to host another in the near future…Roberto de los Realatoro

This is fantastic… I am really happy to see you took a special sort of spin on the theme and had fun with it. Great selections.
