Is Dubuque, Iowa Affordable? Compared to Chicago, to Pueblo???

I stumbled upon a fun little calculator at CNNMoney.com that lets you compare costs of living among major (and semi-major) towns and cities across the United States of America.  By most accounts, the overall cost of living in Dubuque is lower than a majority of the US, though I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions by this simple calculator.

pocket changeWhile Dubuque’s economy has fared better than most in this current recession, it stands to reason that our above average local economy may begin to become a more expensive place to live.  As new arrivals come to our fine city (namely IBM, Hormel, and other relocation employees), we could see higher demand for products and services drive up costs among certain segments.

A few quick comparisons below show how we’re doing these days.  The average American family earns $64,000 per year.
